Playing a shaping role in society
Our new Group corporate strategy has identified playing a shaping role in society as a key enabler. The Group’s ambition is to become a leading, purpose orientated, African bank that is systemically rooted in the countries it serves and which recognizes that our own sustainability is directly linked to the sustainability of the communities in which we operate.
This philosophy informs our business strategy and our approach to corporate citizenship. Each area of our business actively participates in, and contributes to the implementation and delivery of our strategy.
Our long-term aim is to generate substantial social impact through our core business functions. This will enable us to significantly impact some of the key challenges facing society.
We have identified three strategic areas where we believe Barclays Zambia can make a real difference to address these challenges.
Barclays Zambia employees conduct volunteering initiatives using ReadytoWork, an online educational portal that helps youth transition from the world of education to that of employment or entrepreneurship. Financial literacy education is conducted in schools, institutions of higher learning as well as in community groups. The Bank also commenced a scholarships programme for university students in partnership with the Ministry of Higher Education.
Barclays Zambia partners with other organisations to encourage innovation, entrepreneurship and job creation.
The Bank invests in the provision of inclusive banking solutions that not only meet our customers’ needs but aid in the acceleration of financial inclusion in line with Government’s development agenda. Through partnerships with mobile network operators and fintechs, Barclays Zambia has been able to facilitate lending and savings products on mobile money wallets and bulk cash disbursements to mobile numbers without the need for a Bank account.
Barclays Zambia also introduced the ‘We Care’ agenda, an in-country initiative to offer support to the vulnerable in various communities particularly community schools, hospitals/clinics and prisons. This has led to the donation of vital equipment to hospitals including cleaning of surroundings, donation of sanitary towels to adolescent girls in community schools and donation of clothing and foodstuff to orphanages as well as old people’s homes.
For Barclays, sustainability means identifying and managing economic, social and environmental issues across all our operations. Our efforts focus on responsible banking- from developing appropriate services for new customers in developing countries to providing credit based on people's ability to repay and investing in the communities Standard Branches. Three areas of focus are Responsible Finance, Citizenship and Financing the Future.
We believe that running a strong, profitable business, which creates jobs and contributes to economic success, is the basis for good corporate citizenship. Our key areas of focus are contributing to growth and supporting our communities. Underpinning these is a foundation of sound business principles and practice that ensures integrity in the way we do business. With about 1100 employees in Zambia, Barclays prides itself as being the employer of choice.
We recognise the vital role businesses play in job creation and economic growth, and are committed to promoting enterprise around the world. Making credit available, through mortgages to families and business loans, contributes to job creation and economic growth.
We also support a sustainable future through helping our customers, clients and other stakeholders invest in ways that will contribute to growth tomorrow.
This is a vital component of the Barclays Bank Zambia community investment programme which engages and supports employees to get involved with the causes they care about most. A good example is the Chairman's Awards which recognises and celebrates employees for their amazing work in their local communities. This can be through fundraising or volunteering, mentoring, one-off activities or a long-term commitment to improving a community's quality of life.
Make a Difference Day global campaign
Every October, Barclays employees and customers participate in the Make a Difference Day activity campaign aimed at helping and leaving a sustainable impact in the communities.
The Make a Difference Day is a great way to come together as an organisation and for employees to experience how it feels to volunteer in activities ranging from mentoring and befriending to renovating community centres, painting and decorating schools, hospitals and prisons and creating gardens.
Staff Volunteering schemes
Barclays Bank Zambia has a positive and sustainable effect in the communities in which we live which can be measured by the participation rates for volunteering/fundraising activities among our employees. There are two forms of support available to all Barclays employees namely matched fundraising and volunteering grants (work time). In 2010, 1483 Barclays Bank Zambia employees participated in volunteering activities to communities in various parts of Zambia and over K62,000 was spent.
Following an appeal by the Government for private sector players to participate in improving student accommodation at the university, Barclays Bank Zambia took up the cause in early January 2008. Barclays made a commitment of K3.2 billion (£457,000) towards the construction of a student hostel. The University of Zambia management opted to construct a hostel at the Medical School which was faced with a shortage of space given the increase in medical students as the government is working towards improving the doctor-patient ratio in the country.
The work was completed in mid-2010 and the hostel officially handed over to the University of Zambia in October 2010. The ceremony was commissioned by Education Minister, Hon Dora Siliya. The 30-roomed hostel houses more than 60 students, which is closer to the number of yearly enrolments at the medical school.
Barclays will continue to invest in the neighborhoods where the bank has a presence. Supporting causes that matter in local markets is one of the best ways that the bank can meet specific needs and to engage local stakeholders be they customers, community representatives or colleagues.
Barclays Cup Soccer Tournament
As a way of reviving interest in Zambian football, Barclays Bank Zambia and the Football Association of Zambia signed a sponsorship deal in August 2007. This was the start of the Barclays Cup Soccer Tournament which is held annually.
In coming up with the sponsorship deal, Barclays Bank Zambia noted with concern that the state of local football was low, perhaps the lowest it has ever been in years. The dearth of good matches of the past and subsequent loss of quality entertainment produced by local football had led to many soccer fans in Zambia associating themselves more with foreign leagues and teams.
Under the theme Think Football Think Barclays, the bank used this as an opportunity to provide the necessary guidance and resources in order to reignite and revive the interest for local football.
To date, Barclays Bank Zambia has pumped well over K2 billion into the biggest soccer cup in Zambia's football history. Furthermore, the bank has been highly commended by numerous stakeholders for taking a bold decision to continue with sponsorship of the richest soccer tournament in the country, despite the difficult economic conditions which forced other sponsors to discontinue their support to annual football competitions. The Barclays Cup Soccer tournament has now grown into a household football competition, which both football teams and fans alike now always look forward to.
As a responsible corporate citizen committed to increasing the level of interest by Zambians in the Zambian soccer league, Barclays Zambia is working with Supersport to explore the viability of live coverage of Zambian league games.
Support to natural disasters
In 2006, Barclays Bank Zambia came to the aid of settlers in Mwapona village in Choma district of Southern Province, who suffered the consequences of floods as a result of torrential rains. The bank built 15 low cost houses for affected families on higher ground.
In January 2008, Barclays Bank Zambia donated K385,300,000 to support people affected by the severe flooding in Southern Province and other areas in Zambia. The contribution was part of a K1,161.9 billion donation by Barclays Bank plc in London to Red Cross International to help flood victims across Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Zambia. With the financial support, the Red Cross provided emergency shelter, food, blankets and medical care to those affected by the floods.
Barclays Bank Zambia also responded positively to Government's appeal to assist affected families following floods in Western and North-Western provinces in 2009. A cheque of K208,000,000 was handed over to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Zambia Delegation. The contribution was part of a K430,900,000.00 donation by Barclays Bank plc in London to Red Cross International to help flood victims in Botswana and Zambia. The funds enabled the Red Cross to provide emergency shelter, food, blankets and medical care to those affected by the floods.
Zambia Federation of the Blind
Barclays Bank Zambia embarked on the Step Ahead initiative in July 2007 to raise funds for the Zambia Federation for the Blind's tailoring and knitting project, and the Zambia Malaria Foundation education book of Malaria. The tailoring and knitting project is a relief-based scheme, which is fundamentally intended to alleviate poverty amongst the majority blind Zambians and their families. The project is designed to impart knowledge and skill to the blind and their children in knitting and tailoring and designing.
Through the Step Ahead fundraising walks, a total of K500 million was raised through various fundraising activities held involving Barclays employees and customers.
Sport field rehabilitation
In January 2005, Barclays Bank Zambia embarked on a rehabilitation programme of sport fields across the country. Using community based soccer as a platform, the bank wanted to intervene in the spread of HIV/AIDs by using training sessions at the refurbished grounds for awareness programmes.
The bank supported the rehabilitation of three football fields, namely, Nationalist Stadium in Lusaka at a cost of K37,539,487.50, Musa Kasonka Stadium in Ndola with investment of K220 million and Lubwe playing field at Lubwe Mission at a cost of K249,346.700.
The Barclays Zambia Grassroots Soccer Partnership was launched in November 2009. The programme is being spearheaded under Barclays Spaces for Sport programme, using the power of sport to address social issues such as HIV/AIDS awareness among young people. The programme was a three year initiative with an estimated commitment of K800 million. Under this programme, the immediate objective included reaching out to 51,000 youths through existing Government structures as well as to hold more football tournaments and training sessions at which young people are encouraged to undergo HIV counselling and testing.
Launched in 2004, Barclays Spaces for Sports is an exciting, innovative and multi-award winning community investment programme funded by Barclays to support the creation of community sports facilities and opportunities in areas of identified need. Barclays have worked with two national charities, the Football Foundation and Groundwork as its main partners.
Grassroot Soccer partnered with Barclays Bank Zambia in 2006 to create a sustainable nation-wide HIV/AIDS education programme that targets youths. From the partnership inception, 10,771 youths have been trained under the GRS partnership programmes.
Barclays Bank Zambia, Unicef and the Zambian government established a private sector partnership in 2007 to support eight youth resources centres offering courses in skills training, community outreach and enterprise development.
The bank provided K450 million to fund the integration of educational activities into daily recreational facilities at selected youth resource centres to help reduce high risk behaviour among the youth. The programme sought to reach out to 15,000 children and youth infected and affected by HIV and AIDs.
Through this project, the bank has supported the centres to create awareness and build capacity of the communities to tackle the scale and dimensions on the problems facing children and youth in Zambia. Centres targeted under phase one of the partnership were Lubwa mission (Northern Province), Zangani Kachinga (Eastern province), Mukwela (Southern province) Kalingalinga in Lusaka.
Phase two activities are now focused on Kaoma (Western Province), Katembula (Copperbelt), Timba (Northern Province) and Samfya in Luapula Province. The centres were identified to provide a good opportunity for youths unable to access information, empowerment skills and training.
Over a three year period the project will enable 5,400 young people in Zambia to access business skills and basic vocational training. 800 graduates of the GET Ahead programme will be assisted to start their own business, gain skills and be provided with follow up support necessary through the youth centres. It will also provide at least 3,000 out of the 5,400 young people to gain valuable work experience opportunities within the private sector. The project cost is K4, 800,000,000 ($600,000) out of which Barclays has contributed K4,000,000,000 ($500,000) and UNICEF Zambia K800,000,000 ($100,000).
Under this flagship programme, the bank uses financial skills and expertise to help people work towards financial independence and security. Barclays Zambia focuses its efforts on financial inclusion, entrepreneurship, education and helping people into employment. The Barclays first global community investment strategy Banking on brighter futures was launched in October 2007 to use Barclays business knowledge and employees skills and experience to help disadvantaged people work towards financial independence and achieve a brighter future. Barclays has pledged to invest K1.1 trillion ($150m) and 150,000 hours of employees time to support 1,500 Banking on brighter futures projects around the world.
Founded in 1919, Junior Achievement is the world's largest and fastest growing not-for-profit organisation dedicated to educating young people about business, economics and free enterprise. Junior Achievement Zambia (JA Zambia) is a private sector initiative supported by Barclays Bank Zambia.
In 2003, Barclays Bank Zambia and Junior Achievement entered into a partnership in order to: to expand the pool of youngsters who are grounded in the principles of market economics; to provide Junior Achievers participating students with the skills which will adequately prepare them for higher education, running their own businesses and to sensitise the youth on current topical social issues.
Under the Junior Achievement Company Programme, students get a chance to test out their business knowledge in practical terms. Guided by a teacher and a business consultant/role model, they set up a company; trade shares; design, produce and market a product; and finally liquidate a company and pay dividends to shareholders. The programme lasts for 15 weeks and students get hands-on experience in the owning and running of a real company.
The Barclays Bank Zambia and Junior Achievement Zambia partnership took a global perspective in February 2009 when Barclays Emerging Markets signed the You can B - from inspiration to entrepreneurship programme, a three-year partnership with Junior Achievement Worldwide to provide entrepreneurial opportunities, work readiness and financial literacy to young adults in the emerging market region including Zambia.
The You can B - from inspiration to entrepreneurship programme encourages young adults to achieve whatever they set out to achieve and become whoever they want to be. The programme is designed to enable the young adults follow a journey of inspiration into entrepreneurship. The running theme of the partnership is innovation and new thinking. In 2009, Barclays Bank Zambia contributed K98,863,200 to Junior Achievement Zambia activities centred on the following concepts:
B- INSPIRED, think out of the box innovation experience this brings students from a variety of schools together, sets them a challenge to think outside the box and awards the team with the most innovative solution.
B- SMART, with the JA company programme experience students form companies, run them to make real money and then wind them down.
B-CONNECTED, through technology most of the disadvantaged youth are in rural areas and may not have access to volunteers. Barclays, JA and Hewlett Packard are developing an innovative computer based technology to reach rural areas.
B- EXPEREINCED, through a Barclays / JA Job Shadow experience the programme recognises that most students may not set up their own companies and will be employed by other companies. They are offered students the opportunity to spend a day in an office.
B-YOUR DREAM, For those students who have already graduated and would want to take their ideas forward, are brought before a panel of possible investors who might want to invest in a good idea.
Barclays and Plan International have a partnership called Banking on Change. The partnership aims to improve the quality of life for poor people by extending and developing access to basic financial services.
Extending access to banking and financial services within low-income communities allows poor people to manage their money more efficiently and effectively and creates new opportunities for inclusive economic growth. In Africa, where up to 80 percent of the population is un-banked, the initiative has the potential to overcome some of the most significant barriers to financial inclusion and sustainable development."
Through Banking on Change, Barclays and Plan International are supporting financial inclusion of low-income communities primarily through Village Savings and Loan Associations and by providing low-income communities with advice and training on how to manage their accounts. Members pool savings into an interest-bearing fund from which they can then borrow. They also vote on how many loans are disbursed, the amounts and their repayment dates. The associations, which average 10 to 30 members, are located in areas not typically serviced by banks. So far, projects are running in Mazabuka and Chibombo.
Cancer is a number one killer disease in Africa. Statistics show that next to cervical cancer, breast cancer is the second killer amongst women. It is for this reason Barclays through its Local Women in Leadership Programme (LWLP) team took up the challenge to join in the fight against cancer and partnered with Breakthrough Cancer Trust (BCT).
BCT, a support group born out of a need to provide after care support to vulnerable women suffering from breast and cervical cancer also proactively carries out sensitisation sessions to educate women on the importance of early detection of breast cancer.
In 2010, The LWLP team embarked on a number of activities to partner with BCT in the fight against cancer. They renovated B21, a cancer ward at the University teaching Hospital in Lusaka.
They also organised funds to buy a Toyota Land cruiser with assistance from various partners like Toyota Zambia, Airtel, Armaguard, Bank of Zambia, Celsoft, G4S,Grant Thornton, Mweemba Chashi &Partners, Musa Dudhia & Company, National Milling, New Horizon Printing, Price Waterhouse Coopers, Robert & Partners, Steward & Paisley, Tembo Ngulube & Partners and Zambian Breweries.
In this initiative, they requested colleagues and companies to buy a part of a car where each person bought a ticket worth K30,000. Each K30,000 eventually bought the whole car.
The gesture earned the LWLP team the Team Achievement of the Year award for Africa, Middle East and the Indian Ocean at the annual Barclays 2011 Chairman's Awards held in London.
The aim of Barclays Bank Zambia is to continue making a difference in the communities we live in as we touch lives and partner for growth. This year the bank intends to focus projects:-
- Publication of 50,000 copies of a book on malaria jointly with Malaria Foundation of Zambia. The book, aimed at educating young people on preventive measures against the disease, will be distributed freely in public schools.
- The University of Zambia Nkwazi hostel has been completed and was officially handed over in August 2010
- Hand over the visitors' shelter at the Female section of the Lusaka central prison to the Prison administration
- To continue running with all medium-term projects as outlined in detail.
